The first time I came face to face with a Neocon...

The first time I remember coming face to face with a Neocon was when Jeane Kirkpatrick was over at our house during the transition into the Reagan administration in December 1980.  Over the years, I have come to know Jeane as one of the family.  Now she, being a neocon, believed that we should promote democracy around the globe through all of our various means as a country.  She always advocated against the use of force towards this objective unless there was a just cause (national security, genocide, etc.) AND we go in with a plan to get all the institutions up and running as quickly as possible so we can get our military out.  Over the years, including this past Thanksgiving, we have debated the use of force on a country like Iraq where we don't know their culture, their language nor their religion.  In our current debate, she believes the intelligence and I'm skeptical and concerned we're taking our eyes off the ball.

When it comes to Iraq, have we heard any of the planning for what we're going to do once we do plant our flag in Baghdad?  If we don't go in with enough troops to secure the country or the institutions (plans for), we could end up like the British who tried to keep the American colonists down.

The second time that I met a Neocon was in February of 1998 while I was with my family partner in our firm in DC.  A leader for the Project for a New American Century (the Neocons) came in to give a presentation about what they were all about.  They wanted to know how they would be perceived by the electorate and if they should keep a low profile. The representative went on to explain that they believe if we put a flag of democracy in Iraq, between Palestine and Tehran, democracy would flourish, making the Middle East safer for the future... even at the point of a gun if necessary.  Nonetheless though, they were successful in getting President Bill Clinton go along with them and their change in U.S. policy to that of regime change of Iraq.

Given Clinton's Lewinsky problem, they felt that they had the opening they needed to get this through.  Now, as I remember all of this from my past political days and contrast that with the PR campaign / intelligence to sell the Iraq war, I'm skeptical  of Bush 2.0 and his gang to say the least.
