Being interviewed by Patrick Fitzgerald, Special Counsel in the CIA leak case...

Being a little 'ol blogger with a few inside connections that rarely lead to any scoops, you could say that I was bowled over to get a call from Patrick Fitzgerald regarding my post about that run in I had with a high ranking government official a few days before Joe Wilson went public in the NYTimes and over a week before Novak blew Ms. Plame's cover.

Man... is Mr. Fitzgerald ever the perfectionist!   Being on the job since 12/31/03 and he's now tracking down bloggers!  OK, ok, I can hear you screaming for details... here are the ground rules per Mr. Fitzgerald:
  1. I can't reveal the name of the person who spilled the beans. (good because I wasn't going to anyway)
  2. I can't mention any of the other names that he asked me about specifically.  Fine by me...
  3. And I can't quote him directly.  Fine.
Basically, Pat wanted to know exactly when and where I heard this and from whom.  Not being bound by any journalistic standards, I was happy to tell him the specifics if he promised that my identity would remain secret.  He promised so I sang like a canary.

Once finished, he thanked me for my openness and said that he got all the information he needed.

Now on to the speculation on my part...

From his line of questioning, it seemed very clear that he wasn't focusing on one specific leaker per se but rather a conspiracy by a GROUP of people to leak Ms. Plame's identity in retaliation for Joe Wilson's NYTimes op-ed.  He also was very interested in the conversation leading up to the leak and why the high ranking government official revealed Ms. Plame's identity.  BTW, the official used the information that "his wife sent him" as a distraction from the fact that there aren't WMD in Iraq; he didn't dispute Wilson's findings.  This smells like BIG trouble for a White House starting to focus on getting re-elected.  And as our soldiers are still in Iraq with no WMD found, you can see why the White House pushed back SO HARD against Joe Wilson that they were even willing to out an under cover CIA agent.

I'll write more when I know more.
Mr. Purple
