Thoughts on the surge in Iraq

I have been reading and listening to a number of pundits and candidates call the surge in Iraq a success.  Now I was calling for more troops from the beginning all the way up until January 1, 2006 when I decided to change that position from "put more in" to "start bringing them home".

Finally, when Bush 2.0 lost the majority of Congress, only then did he decide to put more troops in.  If that's not playing politics with our troops, I don't know what is.  Bush 2.0 knew that he could keep his war going with his control of Congress and then when he lost that, he decides to put more troops in to keep his war going... unbelievable.  And after watching the reporting over the year about how the surge was going, I realized that yes, the violence has gone down but none of the benchmarks that the President laid out at the start of the surge have been met.  Not one.  What this tells me is that the decision between the two presidential candidates of the major parties come Nov. '08 will be between who is going to keep the troops there and who is going to bring them home.
