The torture debate...
Given all of the time and energy spent over the last couple of years trying to determine what is waterboarding and weather it's torture, can anyone really look themselves in the mirror and say that Abu Ghraib was the product of a couple of bad soldiers like Lynndie England and Charles Graner and a few others? Or was it when Alberto G. wrote a memo as White House counsel on 1/25/02 to say that the Geneva Conventions were quaint?
With the recent revelation that the CIA destroyed video tapes of interrogations defying a decision by a Judge to keep them, this debate seems like it's here to stay for a while.
I will say this again, being a true democracy is HARD. To achieve and sustain our democracy, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard no matter who our enemy is or what they're trying to inflict on us. I'm dumbfounded by President Bush's rhetoric of promoting democracy around the globe on the one hand while he and his administration shreds the constitution under the Theory Unitary Executive on the other. He wants to have his cake and eat it too and I'm sick of it. Our freedom is based on laws and inalienable human rights that even the President of the United States has to follow... or at least hopefully our NEXT President.
UPDATE: At least the above mentioned judge isn't going to roll over for Bush 2.0...
