Which post has gotten the most traffic?
It's this one, about abortion. I wrote it way back in run up to the election in the fall of '04. I was pissed at how wedge issues were being used to scare us (there's Bush 2.0's favorite tactic again). That post is still getting the most traffic today... and I don't know why.
I've decided to take a step further into this very charged debate and try to explain my position on abortion... I hope I don't regret it.
When I switched from being a registered Republican to a Purple Independent in 2000 after I got out of politics, it felt like a weight had been lifted. And the reason it felt that way was because in my heart of hearts, through all my years working to elect Republicans, I didn't feel right being on the side that wanted to tell every woman in this country how they had to treat their own bodies. For me, it was a hard argument to make and I felt disingenuous making it. I respect everyone's right to believe what they want and practice whatever religion they choose but that right and choice doesn't transcend to all. I do believe that life begins at conception but I also believe that INDIVIDUAL life isn't fully realized until that first full breath is taken outside the womb. Prior to that breath, the woman carrying that child is in charge and I, with my libertarian streak, don't feel comfortable in the middle of that relationship and responsibility.
