Evangelical Democrats
This article, written by a Democratic strategist who is an Evangelical, really piqued my interest. She talks about the shame that Evangelicals, who are Democrats, have when it comes to admitting their faith. As a former Republican operative who didn't believe that it was anyone's business what women did with their body, I found it tough to lobby and work on behalf of politicians who wanted to make abortion illegal... but I did it anyway and very well, I might add. What I told myself is that there are a lot of things that I agree with in the Evangelical faith and found a lot of common ground on issues such as feeding the hungry, providing a floor in our society for the poor and being good stewards of our environment. But after 2000, I just couldn't take it anymore... left my job, switched parties to being an Independent and finally felt the weight of that pressure lifted.
I'm a hawk when it comes to the RIGHT foreign policy, I believe in balanced budgets, I am a huge proponent of our capitalistic society but I also believe that global warming is real and man-made, that abortion shouldn't be illegal, that safe sex education should be taught in our public schools, that creationism is a theory that has no business in science class, that gays should be allowed to marry... so when I read Amy Sullivan's article, I could relate all too well to her experience... for me though, just coming from the other direction.
