5 Years in Iraq - link fest
Given that today is the five year anniversary mark for the Iraq war and that a lot of different news organizations / blogs are reporting on such, I thought I'd link to a bunch of pieces relating to such:
We've already known that Bush 2.0's estimate cost for the Iraq war was just a wee bit off base but the numbers are staggering.
A soldier who has served in Iraq has recognized his changing view of the conflict as has Richard Cohen, a liberal hawk reporter.
Dick Cheney could really give a damn what the American people think about the war.
Key Iraqi leaders don't even show up for their political reconciliation conference... which could be considered a problem.
Senator Harry Reid's office has put out a list of figures detailing our Iraq war... which are pretty breathtaking if you ask me.
Here are some links to posts that I wrote in the run up to the war:
On Powell's UN speech & Critical reporting of such
On critical reporting of Iraq intelligence.
On how I would fight the war on terror.
On the first time I came face to face with a Neocon.
On the vote authorizing the war.
Finally, though, I'd like to end with Bush 2.0 saying himself today, on this 5th year of the war, that he "doesn't have any regrets."

For those who missed it, the rising cost of fuel is yet another sign of a Bush Cheney Mission Accomplished. What mission was that you ask? Why the mission was to create record profits for Bush's old oil buddies and Cheny's old corporate buddies. Why do they think the Bush administration went all the way to the supreme court and invoked executive privilege to keep Cheney's secret deals a secret? So when someone tells you Bush's legacy is just torture and lying about it you tell them: hogwash. For the first time in history an American president has started a war for the sole purpose of raising corporate and oil profits and it worked! There's your legacy! In my humble opinion.

While I agree that yes, the oil companies and the independent contractors have profited from the war in Iraq, I feel that those profits were an added benefit for Bush 2.0 and their cronies, not the true reason for the war. I feel that the reason for the war evolved through the Neocons who went through a transition after Bush 1.0 from wanting to overthrow dictators and un-democratic regimes (Iraq enemy number 1) via financial, political and regional pressure to a stance in the mid 1990's of wanting to put a flag of Democracy between Tehran and Palestine in Iraq at the point of a gun. We're finding that pushing democracy at the point of a gun isn't the best way to go about securing our National Security, throwing us into a quagmire in Iraq while continuing to enrich Bush 2.0 & Cheney cronies.
