Whatever Sadr wants, he shall recieve
From how the NYTimes describes it, Sadr has a lot more political power than Bush 2.0 lets on. Bush 2.0 was saying just last week that the fighting in Basra, Baghdad and other parts of Iraq between Sadr's militia and the Iraq army was a good thing and that this conflict has to be resolved sooner or later... but when push came to shove, it seems like the Iraq government is giving Sadr everything he wants to stop the fighting... instead of finishing this conflict once and for all as Maliki has vowed last week. As the article states, this shows just how much weaker the Maliki government is when Sadr decides to get what he wants. Please remember that this is Shia fighting Shia in a political/military battle to see who is REALLY in control of Iraq.
UPDATE: McCain still doesn't get it! He still doesn't understand that a BIG reason that the violence has gone down in Iraq is because of Sadr's cease fire first ordered in August and then just recently extended. To be surprised by this development is incomprehensible. Those of us who have been reading the paper know that the Mehdi army's cease fire is just that and could come undone at any moment... that moment is now and as we can see, Sadr still wields considerable power in both the political and military environments. For McCain to wave this influence off out of hand is just plain wrong.
