One of Bush 1.0's Treasury Dept. economists comments on taxes

Bruce Bartlett, a Treasury Department economist under George H.W. Bush, writes an op-ed for the L.A. Times about the upcoming expiration of the Bush 2.0 tax cuts in 2010 and how the Republicans want to have their cake and eat it too with an issue that they decided to be, in Bartlett's words, "penny wise and pound foolish."  I couldn't agree more with his analysis of how the Republicans are going to try and use this situation to their advantage in November... and none of us should let them.  I may have endorsed Obama but I am a strict fiscal conservative who believes that we HAVE to be on a path toward balancing our budget deficit... and since John McCain flip flopped the wrong way from his previous positions on the 2001 & 2003 tax cuts at the time, I don't expect him to flip again prior to November back to the right side of the issue.

On a side note, I was discussing these tax issues with two of my former Republican colleagues and they readily acknowledge that letting the tax cuts expire in 2010 is NOT a tax increase and that we are now in a position where we have to deal with our budget deficit instead of wishing it away... but of course, those conversations were off the record.
