McCain and his public financing
Just want to follow up with another post on how disingenuous McCain and his campaign's reaction is to Obama's decision to opt out of public financing for his campaign with the help of Josh Marshall over at Talkingpointsmemo.com (the video below). First of all, Obama checked on a form that he would accept public financing IF the Republican nominee did so as well. But what happened was that McCain accepted public financing before it was clear that he would be the nominee so he could secure a loan from a bank for over $4 million by using the public funds as collateral. That money was used to get him to the FL primary when he was broke. When it then became clear that he would win the nomination, he then "said" that he opted out of the system and has spent WAY over the limit allowed in the primary season (between $50 - 60 million; which runs up until the convention). The problem is that the FEC has to release him from public financing... meaning he can't just say he opts out and be out, he has to get permission to get out of public financing but he can't get that permission because the FEC doesn't have all of its members because of a fight between Bush 2.0 and Congress. Following so far?
Now McCain has just announced yesterday (after Obama said he was opting out of public financing) that he will in fact opt IN to public financing. So for him and his campaign to muddy the waters in terms of Obama's decision when McCain's own actions are in fact BREAKING THE LAW, strikes me a below the belt. But that's politics... try to trick the public into believing what you want them to believe instead of what the truth is... and we've had too much of this kind of politics lately. Anyway, below is a clip of Josh Marshall explaining all of this much better that I can... thanks Josh.
