"In the bubble" is McCain's gutter politics excuse?

The talking heads agree that McCain is in the gutter with his attack ads against Obama's character because he's "in the bubble" and only behind told thing via aides who lie about what Obama actually says. Don't know if I buy that but as Josh at TPM points out, the press has had McCain on a "curve" for a long time and the below clip suggests they have a hard time holding McCain accountable for his campaign's attacks.
