Joe Klein, in his latest blog post at Swampland at Time.com, takes McCain and his camp to town for impugning Obama's character and patriotism... Klein's take on it is that since both of these candidates have such vastly differing views on how to move the country forward, what's the need to go after Obama's supposed weak character and lack of patriotism. Klein deduces that the McCain camp is doing so because it's the only way they think they can win.
The choice quote toward the end of the pieces is this (but you should read the whole thing): "So he has made a fateful decision: he has personally impugned Obama's patriotism and allows his surrogates to continue to do that. By doing so, he has allied himself with those who smeared him, his wife, his daughter Bridget, in 2000. Those tactics won George Bush a primary--and a nomination. But they proved a form of slow-acting spiritual poison, rotting the core of the Bush presidency." - Joe Klein; 8/14/08
