McCain forgets the Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, non-religious, atheists and others...
Peter Canellos of The Boston Globe wrote a very interesting article about John McCain and his use of the phrase "Judeo-Christian nation/values" yesterday. In it, he describes the many instances where McCain describes our country as a "Judeo-Christian nation" or a country as having "Judeo-Christian values". As Canellos describes, this term was created in the 1920s as a way "to forestall anti-Semitism".
But what McCain is doing in his repeated use of the term is to exclude all of the other religious and non-religious citizens of our country. I grew up in a household made up of both Catholics and Jews and I consider myself a hybrid of the two if there could ever be such a thing but to exclude the rest of the religions or those who don't prescribe to a religion with the use of this term is just plain wrong. Our country is made up of individual rights that are given to each and every one of us in the Bill of Rights and our Constitution no matter what religion you practice. I wish McCain would recognize this distinction but given his "team" on the job at the moment, I'm not counting on it.
