Soldiers' suicides...
The Washington Post has an article up today that explains how the suicide rate for this year among active duty soldiers is going to top last years record breaking figure of 115. It also predicts that by the time the end of the year rolls around, the rate of active duty soldiers committing suicide will eclipse the national rate of 19 per 100,000. This is the first time that this has happened since the Vietnam war.
Given that the planning of the war in Iraq didn't meet the level it should have, I have a firm belief from both personal and anecdotal evidence, that planning for our wounded (both physically and mentally) soldiers didn't meet the level we expect (and should demand) either. This is an iceberg type situation (we can only see a sliver of the problem; the rest is under the surface) that will be bearing down on us for the next 10, 20 or even 30 years... and one that I will continue to preach to the high heavens about until I start to see the programs and services in place to properly treat our wounded soldiers.
