BREAKING: McCain suspending campaign due to financial crisis
Didn't think I'd be reading this today.
I wonder if the internal polls of the McCain campaign are so dire when it comes to "who would handle the economic crisis better" that McCain feels he needed to go big or go home... and this is certainly going big. But delaying the debate on Friday and asking Obama to suspend his campaign as well seems a little rash... more as it develops.
UPDATE: Various anchors on Fox News are calling this move "bold" and "strong" and "political sacrifice"... I'm sure this is just the type of press the McCain camp was hoping for. And now that they are out in front with this, it's up to Obama to either follow along or keep campaigning... seems like a lose, lose for Obama. I view this as a great tactic by camp McCain... this rates second next to picking Palin.
UPDATE II: Josh Marshall hits the nail on the head... McCain saw his poll numbers diving on the economy, Obama called to see if they could issue a joint statement supporting certain aspects of the bail out, McCain calls back 6 hours later and agrees but then makes a public statement that he's suspending his campaign. McCain is using this crisis as a political tool and very shrewdly, using it to his advantage. Obama gets beaten to the punch by a desperate opponent calling "uncle".
UPDATE III: ABC News is reporting that the Obama camp says the debate is ON!
UPDATE IV: Sen. Harry Reid says "Thanks but no thanks" to McCain's offer. This is a smart move to help Obama out... I'm sure this wasn't done off the cuff without Obama's knowledge and this gives Obama some daylight to move in this situation.
UPDATE V: Obama: "...I plan to debate."
UPDATE VI: It seems that Obama was blindsided by McCain's call to suspend the campaigns and head to Washington... here is how Obama explained is in his press conference: "I proposed putting out the joint statement. He concurred with that. he then also said, 'I would like us to look at suspending the campaign and pushing the debates off.' I said, 'let's put out the joint statement first, and then get our campaigns to discuss this.'" Obama said he later saw McCain announcing his plans on television. Boy, that is a LOW blow by McCain if that is how things really went down. Talk about playing politics...
