McCain's "tactic" (read stunt) yesterday = net positive for Obama
After watching the media yesterday react to John McCain suspending his campaign and wanting to postpone the debate, I believe that in the end, this stunt will be a net positive for Obama. At first, it seemed that McCain had painted Obama into a corner but when Harry Reid gave some push back and then Obama came out and was reasonable in his justification for having the debate on Friday, the more McCain's tactic looks like a stunt. McCain's problem was stated very well by Richard Wolf on Countdown in that McCain has flip-flopped so much over the last ten days in regards to being against bailing out AIG but then being for it; saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong to then saying this is a crisis; being against any regulation and then being for it, heavily. If this tactic was going to have the affect that camp McCain wanted it to have, they should have done it LAST Tuesday or Wednesday... by waiting until yesterday, they seem to be more reactive to their own poll numbers than the economic situation at hand.
A number of pundits have made the comparison to walking and chewing gum at the same time... a President needs to be able to deal with many problems at once and this is a prime example. Lastly, when middle America saw on the news last night that McCain was suspending his campaign and wanting to postpone Friday's debate, they were probably all sitting there feeling that it's been pretty darn tough for them over the last year/year and a half so what took so long for McCain to just now see the light? Below is Richard Wolf's segment on Countdown (Wolf comes in at around the 4:30 mark):
